Review on Kinloch Lodge
Lady Claire Macdonald (‘the cook for all seasons’) has made quite a name for herself with a string of recipe books, newspaper columns, demonstrations and TV appearances, but still finds time to run this 300-year-old lodge overlooking Loch Na Dal with her husband and children. Kinloch is a real family affair.
Head chef is the talented Marcello Tully, who learned his craft at stellar restaurants such as Le Gavroche in Mayfair before joining Kinloch Lodge in 2007, where he has earned 3 AA Rosettes.
First courses steer clear of elaborate fancywork, so expect things like Isle of Skye smoked haddock and leek au gratin or roast red pepper mousse with black olive pâté before main courses ranging from roast leg of Highland-bred lamb with apricot relish and red wine gravy spiked with garlic and rosemary to a ragoût of local seafood on a bed of garlicky sauté leeks plus big helpings of vegetables. Rounding thing off are straightforward desserts such as dark chocolate mousse cake with bitter orange sauce.
