Review on St Mary's Hall Hotel, Spirit Restaurant
Sue and Jamie Le Friec have pulled off quite a coup by regenerating St Mary's Hall and transforming it into a showcase boutique hotel. Chic contemporary design, minimalist luxury and state-of-the-art technology define the interior and there's a dazzling Tuscan-style piazza/garden outside.
The Spirit restaurant revs up with a menu that is fuelled by exciting ideas drawn from the global larder. To start, there might be wild salmon and yellowfin tuna salad with passion fruit and pumpkin seeds ahead of cod baked in sweet miso with rösti and shiitake mushrooms or Bavarian meatloaf with a poached egg and apple butter. Head towards the chequered flag with flashy desserts such as lemongrass crème brûlée or strawberry and cream spring rolls with frozen mango yoghurt.
