Review on The Pig and Butcher
Situated on the corner of a fashionable part of residential Islington, The Pig and Butcher certainly looks the business with its smartly painted exterior. The handsome pub built in the mid 1800's has been taken over by the team that run the successful Princess of Shoreditch and the Smokehouse. It has been sympathetically updated in neutral colours with wooden tables and chairs, comfy banquette seating, and shelves lined with interesting curios.
The focus for their daily changing menu is squarely on high quality ingredients and seasonality, and they have forged a strong relationship with their suppliers, ensuring produce is unrivalled in quality and freshness. The kitchen specialise in rare breeds such as White Park cattle, Iron age pigs and Hebridean lamb and meat is butchered on site.
During summer months they grill over charcoal and wood on the specially built Robata grill and in winter they brine, cure, smoke and braise. Expect hearty rustic dishes such as Tuscan bean and smoked bacon soup followed by a main course of grilled Cornish megrim sole, new potatoes and green sauce, finishing with a traditional sticky toffee pudding, butterscotch and vanilla ice-cream.
To accompany the food is a well-priced wine list with options available by the glass and carafe, together with an excellent selection of craft bottled beers.
