Review on The Tommyfield
The Tommyfield located on the corner of Cleaver Street and busy Kennington Lane is part of the award winning group of Three Cheers pubs. Previously called The White Hart it has undergone a stylish transformation whilst retaining the building's original features. Smart leather banquettes are set against wooden tables, leather bar stools line the long bar and the open kitchen adds theatre to the proceedings. A plaque explains that the pub gets its name from the 150th anniversary of the first chip shop at the Tommyfield market, located in the mill town of Oldham.
The menu takes inspiration from the Victorian chops houses and food markets, with fish from sustainable sources from the English coast, excellent cuts of British beef and traditional pie and mash. On the evening menu you will find starters such as seared Shetland scallops, mushy peas and pancetta or free range chicken liver parfait and balsamic baby onions. While main courses take in guinea fowl breast and confit leg, potato rosti and broad beans or you could choose one of the daily specials featured on the many blackboards displayed around the pub. While old faithfuls feature on the dessert menu with an apple and blackberry crumble served with custard or maybe a traditional Eton Mess.
There is a well chosen wine list with offerings by the carafe and glass, as well as tempting cocktails and guest ales.
