Review on Lyzzick Hall
Originally a farmhouse, situated on the lower slopes of Skiddaw, this personally run country house hotel takes its name from an ancient area of woodland at the back of the hotel, known as Lyzzick Wood (meaning ‘light oak’). Its location ensures cracking views of the Eden Valley and beyond.
The kitchen offers daily-changing menus inspired by modern European cuisine, with occasional Spanish touches in deference to the owners’ homeland (mussels cooked in white wine with chorizo, garlic and herbs, for example). Meals generally run to four courses, with a sorbet or little fish dish between starters and mains; typical choices might include roast fillet of halibut wrapped in pancetta with Puy lentils and red wine sauce or pan-fried pheasant breast with sautéed sweet potato, cheery and port sauce. To conclude, consider iced Grand Marnier parfait with peppered oranges or pear and almond tart with Chantilly cream and raspberry sauce.
