Review on Max's Wine Bar & Restaurant
Max's occupies one of the oldest town houses in Kinsale and the delightful 800-year-old premises has been doing great business for more than two decades. A recent renovation has brightened up the interior, although it still shows its history with thick stone walls, ancient beams and open fires; there's also a pretty conservatory courtyard at the back for al fresco meals.
Olivier and Anne Marie Queva run the show as a double act: he mans the stove, she is the charming presence out front. French cuisine based on Irish ingredients is the order of the day, and visitors can expect a raft of seasonal dishes with broad appeal.
Roast rack of lamb is a perennial favourite, whether it's served with lavender sauce or a confit of butter beans. Locally landed seafood is also a strong suit, and the choice might extend to lobsters, black sole, scallops and more besides. Garlicky grilled mussels or langoustines with pasta and basil sauce are favourite starters, while desserts might include rhubarb and ginger bavarois or creme brulee. The wine list is an award-winning slate, with plenty of options by the glass.
