Review on The Villa Hotel
Built as a Victorian gentleman's residence in rolling Lancashire parkland, this handsome and highly distinctive building is now a thriving hotel and restaurant ideally situated a short drive from junction 3 of the M55.
The beautifully appointed restaurant, now known as the Venue, comprises several interlinked dining areas with nooks and crannies, elegant drapes at the windows and a grand piano. It makes a sumptuous, classical setting for food that makes the most of Lancashire's larder.
Lytham potted shrimps with vine tomato relish or Reg Johnson's corn-fed chicken and rabbit terrine might precede Goosnargh duck breast with black pudding and thyme jus or fillet of fell-bred beef with red onion jam roly-poly, celeriac purée and slow-roast garlic. Ice creams and cheeses are local, and the choice of desserts ranges from rhubarb cheesecake to Bramley apple crumble tartlet with Mrs Kirkham's Lancashire cheese ice cream and dried apple crisp. Sunday lunch is a regular sell-out and light meals are available in the bar.
