Review on Rivea London
Legendary and celebrated Michelin-starred French chef, Alain Ducasse has opened his second London outpost called Rivea in the luxurious boutique hotel Bulgari in prestigious Knightsbridge. Unlike his formal fine dining restaurant Alain Ducasse at the Dorchester, Rivea offers an informal and relaxed eating experience, but it's still a very swanky affair with stylish fittings in keeping with the rest of the hotel.
The subterranean restaurant reached by a sweeping staircase has a décor created by acclaimed Italian architect and designer, Antonio Citterio Patricia Viel and Partners reflecting the glamorous Riviera with sea-blue, silver and white pearlescent themes, together with glossy wood furnishings. There's also an adjacent private dining room seating up to 12 diners that provides a bespoke eating experience. Reflecting the theme of the restaurant, waiting staff are dressed in nautical style, sporting chinos, white shirts and bow ties, navy cardigans and matching navy and white converse trainers.
Alexandre Nicolas takes the reins of the kitchen and he has been with Ducasse for over 10 years both in London and Paris, sharing his passion for Mediterranean cuisine. The menu consists of small plates which blend the classic flavours and vivid colours of the Riviera, focussing on simple flavours bursting with natural flavour, using the finest British ingredients. The suggestion is that diners choose four or five dishes each from the carte which include offerings in the shape of warm octopus and potato salad; artichoke and borage ravioli; baked John Dory Riviera style as well as their popular signature dish of Socca, a crepe made with chickpea flour, water and olive oil, filled with a Niçoise salad. When it comes to desserts there's tempting offerings such as lemon shortbread paired with Limoncello sorbet or rhubarb and strawberry with almond ice cream.
Accompanying the menu is an impressive wine list compiled by Wine Director Gérard Margeon and Head Sommelier Sam Heathcote with a focus on French and Italian vineyards from established vineyards, alongside small, artisanal producers.
