Review on Bibis Italianissimo
Bibis has been part of the Leeds scene for a number of years, but a serious move in 2003 raised its profile immensely. It's now a vast 300-seater arena just off Sovereign Street with a '24 hour award winning Q (car) park' above. Expect queues and plenty of buzz, especially at weekends.
The interior is a grandiose Art Deco extravaganza of mirrors, candelabra, marble-effect pillars and tiled floors and the menu is a huge tome to match.
Around 30 antipasti open the account, with everything from 'carpaccio' of fresh fruit with acacia honey to hot asparagus glazed with citrus hollandaise sauce or even shredded duck spring rolls with plum sauce. A section headed 'Master Pastas' offers things like linguine with sea bass, cherry tomatoes and white wine as well as penne with spicy pepperoni sausage.
Daily specials and a 'catch of the day' bolster the choice of main courses, which ranges from fillet of Angus steak glazed with Dolcelatte cheese, Parma ham and red wine jus to Tuscan wild boar in Chianti with roasted balsamic onions and grilled polenta. There's no let-up when it comes to desserts liker baked Ricotta cheesecake with limoncello sauce, zuppa inglese or tiramisù classico.
