Review on Hansa's Restaurant
Mrs Hansa Dabhi has been serving inimitable Gujarati vegetarian food in this restaurant just off the Leeds' Inner Ring Road/North Street interchange for almost two decades and she's been showered with accolades – including recognition of her efforts as an Asian business woman.
Her menu is as authentic as they come, ingredients are the real thing and flavours have a subtlety and delicacy way beyond the output of most conventional curry houses. As she points out 'there are no such things as starters in Gujarati households': little appetisers are served as snacks for breakfast or between meals, and are best eaten along with main dishes. The range here encompasses everything from ondhwo (golden rice and gram flour cakes with mixed vegetables and sweetcorn served with coriander chutney) to best-selling patra (stuffed tropical colocasia leaves, rolled, steamed then stir-fried with onions and mustard seeds).
Specialities move beyond classic dosas to paletta (sliced aubergines in spiced tomato sauce), ghagat muthiya (spiced chick pea 'koftas' with potatoes) and chevti dhal (a curry made with five kinds of pulses). Thalis are great value, and desserts include some rarely seen offerings including ghari (a crusted sweet pie filled with Indian fudge, served hot with cream).
