Review on Chez Mal Brasserie at Malmaison Edinburgh
The original branch of the Malmaison hotel group occupies a one-time sailor's mission in now-fashionable Leith. Built in 1833, it has an impressive baronial façade overlooking the rejuvenated shore area.
The Chez Mal brasserie has recently been given a facelift, with leather banquettes, wrought ironwork and seductive candlelight creating just the right mood. Here you can sample modern dishes along the lines of smoked halibut with red pepper and shallot relish followed by roast fillet of turbot with braised chicory and Champagne butter sauce or duck leg confit with cherry sauce and pommes purée.
If you fancy something simpler, there might also be moules marinière or the Mal burger with homemade relish and fries, while desserts could range from chocolate fondue with marshmallow and exotic fruits to apple, nut and raisin charlotte with sauce anglaise. Don't forget the highly popular Sunday brunch, which is packed with classics like eggs Benedict and corned beef hash.
