The Shetland belongs to a trio of privately run Lerwick hotels that provide admirable facilities for business people and holidaymakers alike. It's handily placed for the nearby Holmsgarth ferry terminal and makes a good base if you want to check out island's capital.
Meals in the Waterfront Bar & Grill located on the second floor are reasonably priced, no-nonsense affairs offering something to suit just about every appetite or preference. Some typical offerings from the menu might include smoked salmon and cream cheese roulade with basil vinaigrette, native-bred Shetland lamb with braised cabbage and shallow-fried potatoes, spaghetti carbonara and local cod with leeks and tarragon sauce – not forgetting burgers, salads, beer-battered haddock and steaks.
