Review on Sandpiper Inn
In its present form the beautifully restored Sandpiper Inn has only been around for some 30 years, although the building itself has been standing proud on Leyburn's marketplace since the seventeenth century. Quiet corners, little alcoves and a crackling fire give the bar a homely feel, and things are equally relaxed in the green-walled dining room.
The kitchen puts its faith in North Country produce for a menu that runs to apple-smoked black pudding with creamy leek sauce, Whitby cod with prawns and roasted fennel, and fillet of beef with wild mushrooms and black bacon (cured with local molasses).
Other inviting possibilities might include crab and salmon cakes with red pepper mayo, crispy duck leg with plum and orange sauce, and Moroccan-spiced chicken with couscous, plus desserts ranging from chocolate marquise with coffee sauce to blackcurrant vacherin. The well-balanced list of around three dozen wines is a good match for the food.
