Review on Fen House
Opened in 1987 and still on song, David Warne's smart Georgian residence in a Fenland village north of Ely is only open for dinner two nights a week, but it's well worth making the effort.
France is the main inspiration for the competitively priced menu, which runs to three courses with cheese as an extra. A typical evening might commence with grilled goats' cheese on provençal vegetables or cauliflower soup with a topping of poached smoked haddock before rolled saddle of lamb with onion sauce and Madeira gravy or poached breast of guinea fowl in red wine with olives.
As a finale, expect anything from spiced apple tartlet with Calvados custard to hot chocolate pudding with coffee cream. The 60-bin wine list matches the food for quality and value.
