Review on Angler at South Place Hotel
The Angler Restaurant is set on the seventh floor of the South Place Hotel, the first hotel venture from the acclaimed restaurant group D & D. Located just a short stroll from Liverpool Street Station, the restaurant with its angled floor to ceiling windows and outside terrace affords breathtaking views of the city, including the Gherkin and Tower 42. The long dining room has an elegant décor with a specially commissioned mirrored ceiling by Grace & Webb.
Given the piscatorial name, it's no surprise that seafood is a big player here, with the menu changing daily reflecting the very best of market availability. Amongst the starters look for yellow fin tuna tartar, lime and chilli or scallop and lobster ravioli with butter sauce. Main courses take in Angler & Lobster pie, button mushroom and mashed potato or for meat-lovers there could be roast partridge, creamed Savoy cabbage and chestnut sauce. Bringing up the rear are desserts such as baked rice pudding with Victoria plums and clotted cream or a lemon tart with Billington sugar glaze.
The wine list has its share of excellent French whites, particularly Burgundies, but also includes some lesser-known global varieties. The Angler's terrace offers a more casual menu, an outdoor grill and a tempting cocktail list. The restaurant was the recipient of a coveted Michelin star in the 2014 edition of the Guide.
