Review on Oblix at The Shard

Rainer Becker and Arjun Waney, the celebrated duo behind Zuma and Roka restaurants opened their fourth venture, Oblix at The Shard in May 2013. This was the first restaurant to open in the 72-storey skyscraper which took three years to construct, standing at 309.6 metres it's the tallest building in Western Europe.

The Oblix is located over the entire 32nd floor of The Shard and is accessed by a private lift that ascends 500 feet to the restaurant. The interiors have been designed by Claudio Silvestrin, whose previous projects have included London's Armani Store and Princi Café, with front of house wearing uniforms created by top fashion designer Ted Baker. Featuring both a restaurant and a relaxed bar lounge that presents live music, the venue is decked out in a palette of neural colours and textures, so as not to detract from the magnificent panoramic views of London.

Executive Chef is the acclaimed Marcus Eaves, who joins the restaurant from Michelin-starred Pied à Terre. The menu is inspired by a New York grill with the kitchen presenting a spit roast for slow roasting joints, a charcoal grill and pizzas and breads from a wood-fired oven.

Typical offerings on the carte include starters in the shape of lobster and scallop ceviche, jalapeno, coriander and sweet pepper or steak tartare, beef tomato served with grilled sough dough. Main courses bring on board duck with mango chutney from the Rotisserie, or from the Josper grill Dover sole with parsley and butter or maybe a rib-eye steak with your choice of sauce. Bringing up the rear are desserts like yoghurt cake, peach and lemongrass or chocolate brownie sundae, vanilla, hot fudge and caramelized cashews.

There is an extensive wine list to complement the food together with an "interactive sommelier station", the first of its kind in London, and Oblix will also be showcasing wine tastings and masterclasses.
