Review on Ivy House Country Hotel, The Crooked Barn
Nestling beside the watery delights of Oulton Broad, Ivy House comprises the sympathetic conversion of eighteenth-century Suffolk farm buildings and some new additions in vernacular style. It stands in enchanting grounds complete with romantic lily ponds, country gardens and footpaths (you can take a stroll from the hotel right down to the Broad itself).
The aptly named Crooked Barn restaurant is housed in a one-time thatched barn with crooked beams and old floorboards, plus added natural colour from pale green cloths and local artwork. The kitchen takes full advantage of nearby Lowestoft fish market for dishes such as fillet of halibut with roasted fennel and saffron jus or Mediterranean-style sea bass with salad potatoes, cherry tomatoes, baby artichokes and pesto.
Other regional produce including locally reared lamb and dry-aged Suffolk beef also puts in appearance alongside Scottish langoustines and breast of Telmara duck with Savoy cabbage and rhubarb sauce. A cheese savoury is an alternative to desserts such as baked Alaska or passion fruit tart with lime sorbet. Coffees and cream teas are available throughout the day.
