Review on The BrookLodge, Strawberry Tree Restaurant
Ireland's only accredited organic restaurant is part of a truly remarkable enterprise devised and nurtured by three brothers, Evan, Eoin and Bernard Doyle. BrookLodge itself occupies the site of a deserted village in the Wicklow valley and it now comprises a fully-fledged hotel and food complex with a luxurious spa centre, conference facilities, organic food markets, a bakery – even a pub and a working micro-brewery.
The Strawberry Tree is relaxed and cool, with chandeliers hanging from a mirrored ceiling, dark blue décor and mahogany furniture. Everything on the menu is organic or wild and every ingredient is certificated. There's nothing flash or intricate – just honest food with bags of flavour. Work your way through home-smoked beef with coltsfoot and shallot vinaigrette, purple sprouting broccoli soup and marinated chicken with braised chicory and mustard sauce, before a dessert like passion fruit mousse with poppy seed biscuits.
Also ask about the Big Table, where up to 40 people can sit together and enjoy a feast of unlimited proportions. As you might expect, the wine list is totally organic, with representatives from around the globe.
