Review on The Royal Oak
The fact that the Royal Oak is jointly owned by chat show supremo Michael Parkinson and his son is enough to attract celeb spotters to this white-painted pub in Paley Street village - just a few miles from Maidenhead. As you might expect, the interior is filled with photographs, TV memorabilia and cricket mementoes; it's a top-drawer destination for fans of live jazz, too.
Wild fish, seasonal game, locally reared meat and much else besides finds its way on his menus. There might be fried sand eels or ox tongue with pickled cabbage to start, ahead of line-caught Cornish sea bass with celery, roast partridge or salt beef stovie with fried egg and mustard sauce; we can also confirm that the kitchen serves up 'world class' chips.
As for desserts, expect mango soufflé and chocolate fondant as well as Cambridge burnt cream and rhubarb trifle. and chocolate fondant. The 100-bin wine list is loaded with Champagnes and heavy-duty clarets to please the pub's affluent, Bentley-driving clientele.
