Review on The Whitworth Café
This ground-breaking eatery attached to the Whitworth Art Gallery (across the road from the Manchester Royal Infirmary) has proved to be a godsend for families, university staff and local workers. It's a bright, sunny room with an elegant glass and stainless steel interior, designed by the award-winning MUMA with one of the best alfresco terraces in the neighbourhood, and it nails its colours to the mast when it comes to sourcing local and ethical produce.
A chart on the wall pinpoints what's in season, and the short daytime menu is peppered with impressive local names - whether it's Barbakan (Chorlton) bread or Mrs Kirkham's Lancashire cheese. Breakfasts of hot buttered toast and jam or organic pork sausage sandwiches give way to lunchtime eats ranging from plates of mezze, game terrine with piccalilli and pasta to wraps and sandwiches. Cakes and Mrs. Dowson's ice creams (from Blackburn) satisfy any sweet cravings.
Kids have their own proper menu, plus a free art/activity bag, and the choice of drinks runs from Fairtrade teas and coffees to organic cider and wine by the glass.
