Review on Greens
A bastion of Manchester's vegetarian scene for many years, Greens at West Didsbury, continues to live up to its name with suitably verdant colour schemes, plenty of buzzy atmosphere and an imaginative, wide-ranging menu that hops across frontiers and borders at will.
The kitchen's repertoire is ever-changing, but you can expect flashes of invention, exciting up-front flavours and generous portions across the board. Set lunch and dinner menus are one of the best deals of their kind in the city, but the value for money is impressive throughout.
Globally inclined, bistro-style food is the order of the day, with typical dishes along the lines of deep-fried oyster mushrooms with Chinese pancakes and plum sauce, Thai-spiced potato cake with Asian coleslaw and gnocchi with red wine ragù, crispy artichokes, pea and mint pesto. Simon Rimmer also tips his hat to the North West with black pudding and roasted tomatoes on toast and Lancashire hotpot with crisp potatoes and braised red cabbage.
Lancashire cheeses bring up the rear, along with homespun desserts ranging from soft-centred chocolate pudding to apple, plum and cinnamon crumble. 'Inclusive' fixed-price menus are great value and Greens now boasts a short, eclectic list of carefully chosen wines.
