Review on The Lowry Hotel, The River Restaurant
Rocco Forte's five-star Lowry Hotel is part of the Chapel Wharf development on the banks of the Irwell next to Calatrava's landmark Trinity Bridge. A staircase rises from the vast hotel foyer to the capacious River Restaurant, where a wall of windows overlooks the river and another is covered with wine bottles. It oozes cool stylishness.
The kitchen showcases a menu that focuses on a Josper grill and is serious about procuring top-notch supplies, beef is sourced from the Duke of Buccleuch Estates, chicken from Goosenargh, sea bass from Anglelsey and freshly caught lobster arrives daily from Usan.
Expect starters of Inverawe smoked salmon or hand dived scallops and pork belly, before main courses along the lines of half a lemon and rosemary chicken roasted on the grill or rack of lamb served with French fries and a choice of sauce. To finish there are desserts in the shape of dark chocolate fondant or a classic trifle.
If you enjoy the al fresco experience, make your way to the Terrace - the longest space of its kind in the city: when the sun shines it's an incomparable spot for breakfast, brunch and sipping Champagne with a light lunchtime repast.
