Review on Chez Mal Brasserie at Malmaison Manchester
'Manchester is mad for Malmaison' reads the blurb advertising this branch of the exclusive nationwide hotel group. It is housed in a landmark red-brick building (formerly a Joshua Hoyle warehouse) in the heart of Piccadilly by the Rochdale Canal, and sets out its stall as a cool destination complete with a 'gymtonic' and spa.
Malmaison is home to the Chez Mal Brasserie with an urban chic décor featuring a modern mix of banquettes, booths and counter stools at the pewter counter top. The kitchen serves top quality steaks, fish and grill favourites, cooked on oak smoked chips on the Josper grill in the open kitchen. Starters such as smoked duck salad, Bourbon roasted almonds and butterscotch vinaigrette or potted Whitby crab, deep fried oyster and sorrel potatoes could appear on the menu. Mains offer up pan fried hake and chorizo risotto, clams, mussels and fennel pollen, or for meat fans there is a fillet of Galloway and Shorthorn cross, not forgetting their signature 225g Smoakburger handmade with naturally reared ground beef, served with Gruyère, bacon and skinny-chips. To finish its tradition all the way with jam roly poly paired with jam syrup and custard or banana split with cherry cream.
