Review on The Metropolitan
Originally a grand hotel for the old Midland Railway, this imposing, 'titan' Victorian edifice still flaunts its stunning roof timbering, ornate windows and intricate plasterwork. Following a spell in the doldrums and disrepair, it was renovated and re-launched in 1997 as a gastropub serving the suburban fringes of Didsbury to the south of the city.
Its capacious, lofty interior now buzzes with life, and the cosmopolitan hordes spill out onto the terrace(complete with its own bar) and open spaces beyond when the sun shines. Antique prints and hanging plants add to the atmosphere, and there are lots of cosy, intimate areas dotted around, for those who crave a little privacy away from the crush and the sprawl.
Food is served throughout the day, and the menu aims to please with its selection of pub-grub classics and brasserie-style dishes. Expect smoked haddock fishcakes with capers, short-crust pies and grilled Ribble Valley sausages with sticky onions and mash alongside the likes of butter-poached loin of cod with French peas, clam and white grape chowder. At lunchtime there are also light bites, sandwiches, salads and the like. Well-kept real ales and plenty of quaffable wines complete the package.
