Review on Riverside Restaurant at the Compleat Angler
This famous Thames-side MacDonald Compleat Angler hotel takes its name from Izaak Walton's classic seventeenth-century book on angling, and its award-winning Riverside Restaurant makes the most of its fabulous setting. Tables are well dressed in fine napery and flickering candlelight ensures a romantic atmosphere, while in summer months guests can sit back and unwind on their lovely terrace and take in the views.
The kitchen makes admirable use of sustainably locally sourced ingredients for a menu that offers accomplished modern British cooking. Open proceedings with scorched mackerel fillet, potato salad, tartar, caviar dressing, kohlrabi or ham hock and foie gras terrine, pea mousse and raisin purée. Main courses pick up on pulled shoulder of lamb, parmesan Polenta, swede, beetroot and burnt aubergine puree or fish fans will enjoy the roasted fillet of cod,
dehydrated grapes, caramelised cauliflower puree and red wine sauce. When it comes to desserts think mirror glazed chocolate delice, chocolate soil and vanilla cream or blackberry parfait, paired with toffee apple puree and crème fraiche sorbet.
