Review on The Crown Inn
Tucked away in a beguiling hamlet on the southern fringes of the Peak District (some eight miles from Ashbourne), the Crown at Marston Montgomery still bears all the hallmarks of a traditional country inn with its Georgian farmhouse features, beamed ceilings and old fireplaces. But it has also moved with the times, witness modern leather sofas, original canvases on earthy-hued walls and an elevated patio for alfresco meals.
The kitchen delivers a mix of brasserie-style food and traditional pub grub based on locally sourced produce. Among the starters might be ham hock and black pudding terrine with homemade chutney or twice-baked Stilton soufflé with pickled pear salad, while main courses could take in pan-fried sea bass with sauce vierge or blade of beef with braised red cabbage. Sandwiches, bagels and lighter dishes are also available at lunchtime, and desserts might include glazed citrus tart. Seafood specials are worth exploring, and a traditional roast dominates the show on Sundays.
