Review on The Sun Inn
Straddling England and Wales, on the main road between Shrewsbury and Montgomery, the 300-year-old Sun Inn stands proudly at the top of the village and makes an ideal pit-stop for travellers, sightseers and walkers trekking the Offas Dyke trail.
New owners the Gartell family run the place with bags of enthusiasm: Jean and Sally take care of business out front, while Peter and son Dominic man the kitchen. Local produce (plus fish from Newlyn) is the jumping off point for regularly changing restaurant menus in the mould of chicken and wild mushroom terrine with truffle oil, roast loin of lamb with courgettes, garlic and rosemary sauce or wild boar steak with shallots and chestnut sauce. Mayhill Green cheeses are alternatives to desserts such as pears in red wine or apple cake with Calvados syrup and cinnamon ice cream. Simpler pub grub and real ales are the staples in the convivial bar.
