Review on The Chequers
The Chequers is a smart pub and restaurant in the heart of the delightful village of Matching Green, a few minutes from the M11 on the Herts and Essex Border and three miles east of Harlow's modern town centre. The pub is situated overlooking one of the largest village greens in Essex and is lined with a variety of houses ranging in age from the 14th to the 19th century, twenty-eight of which are listed buildings. The Chequers has been owned and run by husband and wife team Roberto and Giovanna Zeolla since 2001 and they both came to this venture with an extensive background in the hospitality industry. The restaurant has an inviting and welcoming interior, while their terrace during the summer months is a lovely place to sit and relax, especially when there is a cricket match playing.
The kitchen is keen to source local and organic ingredients wherever possible, vegetables come from their own allotments and fresh herbs are supplied from the Restaurant's herb garden. A popular starter is a sharing hot seafood platter for two consisting of half lobster, scallops, king prawns, mussels, hot smoked salmon, garlic butter, served with char-grilled ciabatta or opt for the chicken liver parfait with toasted granary bread and red onion marmalade. There's an excellent selection of risottos, pastas and salads that can be chosen as either a starter or main course, or from the Connoisseurs choice on the menu there's dishes like braised Salt March lamb shank with herb mash and sautéed greens.
Service is friendly and welcoming and look out for their popular cabaret tribute nights.
