Review on Mayfair Garden
Opened to great acclaim in 1983 as The Princess Garden, it has now been renamed The Mayfair Garden. A swish upscale Chinese restaurant, minutes from the hustle and bustle of Oxford Street, it's a light and airy space with a smart contemporary décor.
The kitchen specialises in Northern provincial and Peking cuisine, kicking off with a fascinating selection of hot and cold starters ranging from soft-shell crab with spicy salt to five-spiced beef slices and Peking-style sea blubber. Luxury ingredients like shark's fin, abalone and lobster share the billing with sizzling veal and black pepper sauce, fried Dover sole with Chinese rice wine, braised tiger prawns with garlic, and diced chicken with mango – not forgetting authentic Peking duck.
The restaurant now also offers a range of authentic dim sum including Peking ravioli with chilli sauce, steamed cuttlefish with garlic, shredded mooli cakes and baked char sui buns as well as curious desserts such as sago with coconut juice or snow fungus and cashew nut soup.
