Review on Sophie's Restaurant
French country cooking is the theme and the avowed aim of Sophie Dominique Craddock's delightful and very personal little restaurant in a Grade II-listed Georgian building. Her Gallic roots run deep and it shows in her forthright approach to flavours and authentic ingredients (which including pickings from the family garden in France).
The main emphasis is on light meals and weekday lunches built around concise menus that trot through the likes of pork and Armagnac terrine, baby hake with roast fennel and tomatoes, and desserts such as crêpes with chestnut purée. It's advisable to book well ahead for Sophie's Saturday night extravaganzas, which showcase regional classics such as guinea fowl with Agen prunes and broad beans, cassoulet de Castelnaudary, or gigot of salt-marsh lamb.
France naturally steals the show as regards wine, with many bottles directly imported from selected vineyards; prices are very fair.
