Review on The Thatchers Arms
'An excellent example of a real country pub,' noted one Mobile Food Guide reporter about this revitalised hostelry, The Thatchers Arms on the Essex/Suffolk border overlooking the glorious Stour Valley at Mount Bures. It's just the place for a pint, a game of backgammon and some honest locally sourced good.
Kick off with a warm salad of smoked Suffolk bacon, black pudding and poached egg before haddock in Adnams beer batter with chunky chips, a 28-day hung ribeye steak or local herb and black pepper sausages with creamy mash and 'real gravy'. To finish, don't miss the kitchen's famous steamed puddings (perhaps treacle sponge with real custard). Otherwise, explore the board of British cheeses served with chutney from Bush Cottage Kitchen in Earls Colne.
Draught beers from fine East Anglian breweries including Crouch Vale, Nethergate, Mauldons and Mersea Island sit alongside a swanky wine list from Southwold superstar, Adnams; also look our for wines from the local Mersea Island vineyard, and farm-pressed apple juice from White Colne.
Congratulations on being the proud winners of Colchester & North Essex CAMRA Pub of the Year 2011 and 2012 & Pilsner Urquells Smartest Pub.
