Review on The Staff of Life Inn
This tidy-looking, gabled hostelry was built as a private residence during Edwardian times, but for many years it has been plying its trade as a 'country pub and eatery'. Inside, the bar is full of traditional features including flagstoned floors, high-backed settles and a wood-panelled ceiling.
The dining area is a country barn-like space that overlooks the patio garden with its pergola and teak furniture. Here you can pick from a regular menu of upmarket gastropub food that's always bolstered by daily specials.
Kick off with an English salad plate, classic Peking duck or seared scallops on tarragon-scented black pudding and black bean sauce, before prime meat from Joseph Morris (perhaps slow-cooked shin of beef on buttery mash with port jus and wholegrain mustard sauce) or wild mushroom and spring onion risotto. Desserts are 'handcrafted' by a certain Linda Neill - expect anything from rich chocolate truffle torte to vanilla and gingerbread cheesecake.
