Review on Westons Scrumpy House Restaurant-Café
Visitors embarking on a tour of Weston's cider-making set-up often make a beeline for this independently run restaurant/bar, which is idyllically situated right on the company's estate. The seventeenth-century hay barn has been transformed into a warm, atmospheric venue filled with all manner of cider memorabilia and curios.
The kitchen deploys Herefordshire produce for a short menu that might kick off with crisp black pudding with cauliflower purée and roasted garlic or sticky five-spice beef with coriander noodles. After that, expect anything from Hereford lamb hotpot to pork steak with roasted beetroot and a vintage cider reduction.
Friday brings fresh fish, which shows up creatively in dishes such as seared scallops on squid ink spaghetti with crispy seaweed, mussels cooked in scrumpy or roast whole sea bass stuffed with home-grown herbs (choose your own selection). Traditional desserts and locally made ice creams round things off.
At lunchtime you can also get toasted paninis and specials such as cider-braised ham with free-range egg and chunky chips. The short wine list offers excellent value, and the full range of Weston's ciders (and perry) are on tap to quench the thirst.
