Review on Killashee House & Villa Spa, Turners Restaurant
At one time this majestic Victorian manor house (circa 1861) served as a boys' school and convent, but these days its main purpose is as a luxury hotel with a spa, leisure complex and conference facilities. The building has a grand location, set amid 80 acres of manicured gardens and lawns just outside Naas.
Turners Restaurant is a lavishly appointed dining room on a grand scale, with chandeliers, ornate columns, intricate plasterwork and a harpist on hand to serenade diners at the weekend. The kitchen makes fruitful use of Irish produce for an elaborate menu that might feature seared sirloin of Irish beef with parsnip gratin, red onion puree and Madeira jus and duck breast with poached plums and port jus, plus seafood such as fillet of sea bass with butternut squash and truffle jus. For dessert, there might be coconut macaroon with vanilla cream, raspberries and passion fruit sorbet.
Throughout the week, you can also enjoy more casual, brasserie-style food in Jack's (think wraps, savoury crepes and more substantial dishes such as Thai chicken curry or confit duck with colcannon).
