Review on Lairhillock Inn
Marvellous views from the conservatory are just one of the attractions at this isolated 200-year-old coaching inn on the back road from Stonehaven to Aberdeen. Real ales and real fires set the mood in the original Snug bar, where robust pub food is the order of the day.
Alternatively, opt for the Crynoch Restaurant, which offers more elaborate menus based around genuine Scottish produce. Kick off with a bowl of traditional Cullen skink or homemade terrine before – say – pork and black pudding sausages with mash, baked salmon fillet with a black pepper and Parmesan crust or grilled escalopes of venison with wild mushroom, red wine and juniper sauce. A blackboard of homemade desserts lists things like sticky ginger pudding with vanilla ice cream. Children have their own mini menu, and the Sunday lunch menu changes each week.
