Review on artisan

artisan, formerly called Food Social is housed in Newcastle's famous Biscuit Factory - Britain's largest art store/gallery. Not surprisingly, much of the interior space is taken up by contemporary prints, photos, drawings, sculpture and photography, and the cooking follows a vivid modern path.

At the helm in the kitchen is North East Chef of the year winner Andrew Wilkinson, who places great emphasis on locally sourced ingredients that form the backbone of his seasonal menus, changing daily to reflect the very best of market availability. You might begin with North Shields fish soup, rouille, gruyere and garlic croutons ahead of a succulent 12 hour cured bacon chop, caramelised apple, bubble and squeak and Madeira sauce or for fish lovers there's fillet of salmon, heritage potatoes, new season asparagus and hollandaise sauce. There are some tasty choices when it comes to desserts choose the coconut panna cotta, spiced pineapples, mango and lime sorbet or for something more traditional there's sticky toffee pudding, hot toffee sauce and vanilla ice cream.
