Review on The King Neptune
A long-serving stalwart founded in 1986, the King Neptune still rules in Newcastle Chinatown. Customers keep coming, the place is always busy and thankfully there’s plenty of space in the traditional red and gold ground-floor room as well as the contemporary eating area upstairs.
As you might expect from the maritime name, seafood is a major theme on the menu. Lobsters, excellent Northumbrian crab (perhaps stir-fried with ginger and spring onions), scallops, Dover sole and the like are procured from the East Coast ports.
There’s also plenty for those who prefer something other than fish: the menu covers most of the familiar regional specialities, ranging from Peking-style spare ribs and classic aromatic crispy duck to chicken in fiery Szechuan sauce.
