Review on Sky Apple Café
A breath of fresh air for Newcastle’s vegetarians and vegans (and others who simply enjoy inventive food and exotic flavours), the Sky Apple Café is a good humoured, easy-going place. It should come as no surprise that it attracts a happy crew of students, young families, office girls and suited types.
Self-styled ‘Vegetarian Chef’ Andy Young cooked at The Gate and Blah, Blah, Blah in London before heading north to Tyneside. During the day, he pleases the crowds with a satisfying menu of pannini melts, sandwiches and dishes like Thai vegetable curry, hummus burritos, and aubergine and apricot tagine, along with a host of cakes and pastries.
Three evenings a week, the café puts on its glad rags for inventive bistro-style meals along the lines of sweet potato fritta with red pepper coulis, pumpkin and goats’ cheese risotto with red onion crostini, and desserts ranging from black cherry gâteau with Kirsch cream to banana and pecan pie. The Sky Apple Café is unlicensed, but you can BYO in the evening for a nominal corkage charge.
