Review on The Old Schoolhouse Inn
A hot spot and favourite stopover for dedicated birdwatchers, the Old Schoolhouse Inn stands within sight of Castle Espie and Strangford Lough (Ireland's first designated Marine Nature Reserve) in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Terry and Avril Brown have been welcoming travellers and 'twitchers' for more than 20 years and have established a reputation for food as well as accommodation.
The kitchen is the domain of Will Brown who has climbed the culinary ladder in a number of critically acclaimed restaurants over the years including Michelin-starred restaurant, The Square in Mayfair. The focus is on impeccable ingredients sourced from local suppliers showcasing starters in the shape of Strangford Lough mackerel, Strangford crab, smoked mackerel fishcake, Ballydrain beetroot and apple followed by a main course of beef bourguignon, creamed potato, pearl onion, Alsace bacon, foraged mushrooms and Bordelaise sauce.
