Review on Beechwood Hotel & Restaurant
Famous for its links with Agatha Christie (many of her family letters are on show in the hallway), this elegant red-brick country house is carefully maintained and run by Don Birch and Lindsay Spalding.
The restaurant is the hub of the hotel, and chef Steven Norgate is passionate about Norfolk produce: he even creates 'The Ten Mile Dinner', where all ingredients are sourced from within a ten-mile radius of the hotel. That means Cromer crabs as well as Morston mussels, Thornham oysters, Sheringham lobsters, marsh samphire and more besides.
You might begin with Walsingham cheese tart with mustard and smoked bacon ice cream or pigeon on fondant potato with red wine jus, before proceeding to loin of Norfolk lamb with dauphinoise potatoes and rosemary or grilled sole on wilted spinach with little gem and shrimp butter. Desserts are many and varied, but prune and chocolate tart is typical.
