Review on Ee-Usk
'Ee-usk' is a phonetic translation of the Gaelic word for 'fish', so there are no prizes for guessing the main thrust of the menu in this livewire venue. The setting is an odd one: a glass warehouse of a building with a red tin roof that incorporates the harbourmaster's office on the North Pier. As you might expect, there are stunning views over Oban Bay and the Sound of Kerrera.
The place is a no-frills showcase for seafood from the local fishermen, and menus change regularly to make the most of the catch. There's no denying the freshness of the ingredients and they are given the treatment they deserve to bring out their full natural flavours: no unnecessary garnishes or fancy gestures, just honest modern cooking.
Creel-caught langoustines with chilli and ginger, 'wee pots' of smoked haddock and mash, mussels and fishcakes could precede baked halibut with creamed leeks, haddock and chips or grand platters of mixed seafood. Meat eaters are offered steak and desserts hit the comfort button with cloutie dumpling or bread-and-butter pudding.
