Review on The Stag at Offchurch
The Stag is a traditional country village pub set in a picturesque 16th century thatched building in the centre of the historic village of Offchurch, a few miles from Leamington Spa. It has recently undergone a stunning refurbishment in the bar and restaurant areas by new owners Charles Harris and Nigel Brown, who have picked up Les Routiers 2011 Newcomers of the Year Award, as well as Winner of the Publican 2010 Best Food Pub of the Year.
The kitchen makes admiral use of local produce using high quality ingredients for the seasonal Anglo French cuisine. Kick off with pan fried pigeon breast, petit pois á la française or tiger prawns in shellfish bisque, gruyere croutes, rouille before mains of parmesan & truffle risotto cakes, smoked mozzarella, ratatouille vegetables or Cornish lamb cutlets, pomme anna, spinach, niçoise vegetables, rosemary jus. The steaks on offer are supplied dry aged to a minimum of 28 days by their specialist butcher Aubrey Allen and are traceable back to the farm where the beef was reared.
To finish there are an array of tempting desserts such as buttermilk and rose water panna cotta, rhubarb compote and shortbread biscuit or a traditional ginger sponge, butterscotch sauce, vanilla ice cream. The wine list is very reasonably priced to compliment the dishes, together with friendly and efficient service, The Stag is attracting diners from far afield. There is also a very nice garden with smart rattan furniture for dining al fresco during the summer months.
