Review on Le Violon d'Ingres

Le Violon d'Ingres is celebrity chef Christian Constant's flagship restaurant set in the 7th arrondissement of Paris, a short stroll from the Eiffel Tower. The restaurant has been given a makeover by interior designer Luis Aleluia and he has created a fabulous deluxe brasserie. The façade has a new bold mushroom and burgundy sign, with large picture windows that flood the restaurant with light. The contemporary décor in tones of cream and brown now features an open kitchen with a long chef's table just outside.

Christian Constant hails from a village called Montauban and his dishes are based on this region of South-West France, but with a modern spin. He has created the "Le Menu-Carte" which consists of a choice of 5 starters, six mains, cheese and four desserts, together with a daily specials menu. Vegetarians can also be catered for if they call ahead. When in season you will find the restaurant's ever popular signature dish of woodpigeon, cooked a la planche with fricassee of girolle mushrooms and sweet garlic. Other dishes that feature on the menu are spider rock crab, fennel cream and herring caviar or a hearty Tete de Veau, veal's head with the tongue and brain poached served with sauce Gribiche which is capers and hard boiled eggs whisked into a mayonnaise. Or, how about succulent rib of beef cooked a la plancha with a gratin of macaroni and a wonderful lasagne and daube of beef cheeks with marrowbone. Stephane Schmidt has been Chef de Cuisine of Michelin starred Le Violon d'Ingres since 2001 and comes with an impeccable pedigree having worked for Alain Ducasse and Alain Passard, so this enables Constant to oversee his two other restaurants, Les Cocottes and Café Constant located just next door.

The restaurant has a very fine wine cellar assembled by Sommelier Fabien Richez who has been with Christian Constant since 2003. Le Violon d'Ingres is a charming chic restaurant with a lively atmosphere and discreet service.
