Review on Castle Venlaw Hotel
Stunning views and a genuine homely atmosphere are great assets at this eighteenth-century country hideaway surrounded by wooded grounds on the slopes of the Moorfoot Hills.
The library bar makes a good spot for some relaxation or a light lunch; otherwise save your appetite for dinner in the gracious restaurant, with its corniced ceiling, ornamental fireplaces and tall windows.
A typical menu might run along the lines of prawns with Marie Rose sauce and red chard leaves, suprÍme of guinea fowl with roast potatoes and grain mustard sauce, and iced Drambuie parfait with hazelnut clusters. A few old-school 'house specials' like steak and ale pie, Caesar salad or lamb's liver and bacon are added on to please the traditionalists.
