Review on Brackenrigg Inn
There are fabulous views across Ullswater to the fells from the terrace and bay windows of this white-painted eighteenth-century inn.
The cooking has a modern British slant, with Cumbrian produce much in evidence – whether you are eating Cumberland sausages in the panelled bar or marinated chump of Lakeland lamb on a bed of goats' cheese mash with roasted pepper and olive sauce in the restaurant.
Other dishes on the nightly-changing dinner menu might include warm duck confit and spring onion salad served in a filo basket with tomato chilli jam and coriander dressing, and loin of pork with roasted Bury black pudding, apple rösti and Pommery mustard sauce followed by glazed lemon tart. 'Quality food without the fuss' is the message.
Sunday lunch represents good value, and the wine list includes quite a few unusual little numbers (ask about their wine appreciation weekends).
