Review on Assaggetti
Spread over two floors in a former bank building, Assaggetti is a modern Italian restaurant situated opposite the Theatre Royal Haymarket, a short stroll from Piccadilly Circus and Leicester Square. Assaggetti is part of the Metropolitan group of restaurants owned by Stefano Fraquelli which includes Zia Teresa in Knightsbridge and Getti in Marylebone and a further branch on Jermyn Street. It's a light and airy affair with oak tables and flooring, brown leather banquette seating, aged gilt-framed mirrors adorn the walls and a stunning Phillips and Wood glass chandelier takes centre stage over the spiral staircase on the first floor.
Assaggheti is Italian for small bites and this is what the relaxed venue serves, a tapas style menu of small dishes. Expect Italian regional dishes along the lines of squid and mango salad, a pizzettine of spicy Tuscan sausage, handmade spaghettoni and duck ragù or taglierini with crab. To finish there are classic desserts such as tiramisù or a wild berry panna cotta.
The wine on the brief considered list reflects the Italian menu, with some options available by the glass or carafe, together with some tasty cocktails.
