Review on Fox and Hounds Country Inn
On the fringes of the North York Moors National Park and within easy reach of York, the eighteenth-century Fox and Hounds makes a perfect base for exploring the area; it’s also the starting point for the famous Riverside and Woodland Walks.
The old sandstone building has been at the heart of village life for more than two centuries and it now pulls in customers from far and wide with its adventurous modern food. One menu is served in the traditional bar and the elegantly refurbished restaurant, and you can expect plenty of cosmopolitan style and confidence from the team in the kitchen.
At lunchtime the emphasis is on robust, no-nonsense dishes like grilled black pudding with red onion marmalade and poached egg, calf’s liver with mustard mash, and beer battered haddock and chips. Evening heralds a more ambitious slate of dishes including â€" maybe â€" confit of duck with pak choi, mango, cashews and roasted peppers, spiced fillet of monkfish with light mussel chowder, and desserts such as lemon tart with local clotted cream or bread-and-butter pudding with apricot glaze and warm vanilla sauce. Also look for the weekly selection of fish specials, plus local roast beef for Sunday lunch. The wine list is concise and fairly priced.
