Review on Llechwen Hall Hotel, Oak Beam Restaurant
High on a hill overlooking the Aberdare and Merthyr Valleys, this 200-year-old beamed longhouse has served many functions over the years. It has done duty as a private school and magistrates court, but now operates as a luxury hotel set in six acres of grounds with magnificent views.
Inside it is done out in traditional style, with lots of Victorian-style trappings and traditional fixtures. There are two elegant dining rooms, where guests can enjoy modern cuisine based on carefully sourced ingredients. Warm Stilton tart with a compote of sweet and sour shallots is a typical first course, while mains might range from slow-cooked lamb shank with Puy lentils and thyme jus to grilled pork tenderloin with straw potatoes and béarnaise sauce. For dessert, apricot and almond tart might do the trick.
