Review on The Spencer
It's not difficult to spot The Spencer, a bright and breezy new gastro pub, the rather grand-looking Victorian tavern formerly the Putney Page, stands right by the east side of Putney Common and it attracts a lively mix of walkers, midweek grazers, families and so-called 'destination diners'.
Inside, it's been given the Country Living treatment with a large sunlit dining room done out in pastel shades, a relaxed fireside area, book shelves and a games chest, plus a big pavement terrace. An inviting city escape, in fact.
On the bar menu you'll find a selection of 'British tapas' - potted shrimps, mini steak and kidney pies, salt cod fritters and so forth. Alternatively check out the restaurant-style lunch and dinner offerings, which might include seared smoked salmon with haricot beans, macaroni cheese, braised turbot ragoût or confit of duck with curly kale. For afters, try comforting rice pudding with roast plums or chocolate tart. The wine list is a labour of love, born out of painstaking research and sampling.
