Review on Queen's Head & Artichoke
There's been a tavern on this site since the reign of Good Queen Bess (the name was apparently dreamed up by her head cook), although the present hostelry only dates from around 1900. It now runs as a brisk and busy gastropub, equally handy for Regent's Park strollers and Euston Road office types.
The downstairs bar is a dressed-down space filled with bare wooden tables and weather-beaten sofas, while the first-floor dining room puts on a more flamboyant face with ornate clocks and gold-framed pictures. Food is served right through the day and you can opt for a few plates of tapas or something more filling from the well-considered modern menu.
Around 20 different items feature on the tapas list, from hummus with flatbread, grilled courgettes and sweet potato couscous to chorizo with Puy lentils, fishcakes and pork belly skewers marinated in paprika. Among the more substantial dishes are Brie and leek tart, grilled organic Black Mountain ribeye with hand-cut chips, and sea bream with squid, rocket and tomato salsa. For dessert, try Tuscan citrus cake with Greek yoghurt or chilli chocolate mousse with whipped cream.
